The incredibly young, talented and promising artist Gurmmet Marwah completed his BFA and MFA from College of Art, New Delhi in 2011.The much awarded artist bases his work on narratives at two levels i.e., the personal and the societal. The images are sarcastic expressions that have their origin in deeply felt emotions. In a way the satire inherent in his work serves to resolve inner conflicts.
Desire is a fundamental aspect of his work which has its many forms as the explosion and the entrapment of the heart. He uses animals and objects as symbols as well as crucibles of emotive content. Gandhiji stands for simplicity, high morals and values. The image of the donkey represents obstinacy against odds. The owl has been used to symbolize legacy and the sense of associated nostalgia.
The heart, the crown, the jars, the soda-bottles, the donkey, the owl and the cow are amongst the various symbols that have been presented in his work. The crown, which is a symbol of political authority, also fits the bill as an object of desire. The entrapment of hearts in jars and soda-bottles lead to visual puns. The series depicts examples of human behavior and interactions as satire, using animals as metaphors.
The artist exhibits his most enthralling new series “ THE GOLDEN GREED” at 105arts. Through this series the artist contends, “after making it through the very grave pandemic, I realised that greed is also an important element of human nature. When all hope is lost and everything is bleak; the greed for life, for health, for love and for material things can help one to reattach oneself to this world.
