Vinita Karim

Home is not a place; it is an emotion. Home may not always be a fixed location. Home is wherever we are. Home is the memories we carry with us, the aromas of a marketplace, the waves of our favourite beach, the colours of a sunset, a palace that is beautiful even in ruins, or the marvel at the first sight of a skyscraper. There is no artist who exemplifies the beauty and wonder of a life well-travelled than Vinita Karim.

She is a world citizen in the truest sense, having lived all over the world and experienced the chaos and order, the buildings and people, the history and the geography that form the soul of the place. Born in Myanmar, of Indian descent, educated in both Sweden and the Philippines, Vinita has incorporated ever-changing surroundings into captivating cityscapes. The story of a city, told in Vinita’s textured palette rich with reds, blues and vibrant golds, enhanced by acrylic, oil, natural pigments and even embroidery, is one that is layered and nuanced.

Her unique look at architectural elements endowed with rich colours accords her work with adepth, and a balance of magic and realism, imagination and pragmatism, abstraction and representation. For Vinita, her art is akin to a meditative experience.

This multifaceted artist has had numerous solo shows around the world. The viewer is drawn to the vivid colours, and the whispered histories that are hidden in every nook and corner of her cities, as if the city itself is asking them to stay a while, to linger, and to soak in the many charms it has to offer.
