Nayanaa Kanodia
Nayanaa is an artist whose aesthetic is as multifaceted as herself. She is a pioneer in the L’Art Naif genre, which is known for its direct approach and a genuine, natural expression. This economist-artist uses bright colours, intricate shapes, exuberance and a subtle tongue-in-cheek expression that lends a touch of whimsy to her works.
Irony, satire, wit, and imagination are emotions that have a certain universality to them. You could be anywhere in the world, but one look at a commentary on social issues can make you feel right at home. Nayanaa’s paintings place the normal in a fantastical, often surrealistic surrounding. Her flair finds expression in the way subtlety of vision and nuanced complexity of issues is depicted through a flamboyance of colour and patterns. Her work invites the viewer to look beyond the accepted notions of the ordinary, to be rewarded by infinite expressions and interpretations.
Besides being invited by the world-renowned Victoria and Albert Museum in London, UK to demonstrate her painting techniques and exhibit her paintings in the gallery; her work is on permanent display at the Musée International D’Naif Art in Paris. She has been exhibited all over the world and has earned extensive appreciation.. Her works are deeply felt, emotive works of an artist who thinks and absorbs her surroundings to create a new layered artistic language.
“Unalloyed pleasure”, “gift for understated comedy”, “ attentive irreverence”, “conviction that art and life can interweave”, “seriousness of purpose” - Ranjit Hoskote, Art Critic
“Delights the viewer with its whimsy, yet conveys most the important social messages of our life” - Anjali Ela menon, artist
